December 10, 1916 — August 23, 2008

Mrs. Laura Whalen, passed away Saturday, August 23, 2008, at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky. She had attained the age of 91 years , 8 months and 13 days. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Pine Knot Funeral Home with Rev. David Troxell and Rev. David Burton officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Knot Cemetery. The family will received friends Monday evening from 6 a€" 9 p.m. at Pine Knot Funeral Home. Born at Strunk, Kentucky, on December 10, 1916, she was the daughter of the late George Newton and Rachel Daugherty Ross. She had been a homemaker and member of the Hilltop Baptist Church. She had enjoyed cooking and canning, gardening, working with her flowers and being outdoors. She cherished the time she was able to spend with her family, especially the grandchildren. She loved going to church which was the last thing she did before she became sick. Those preceding her in death are her parents George and Rachel Ross, a son Lewis West, her brothers Walter, George, Jr., Elige, Kenneth, Eugene and Columbus Ross and two sisters Christine Musgrove and Elizabeth South. Surviving family include two sons George (and Rose) West of Oneida, Tennessee, and Carl "Buddy" King of Strunk, four daughters Erna (and Lance) Lay of Revelo, Sharon West of Somerset, Pernia Lewis of Pine Knot, and Navada Haynes of Somerset, a sister Etta Anderson of Muncie, Indiana, 24 grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other family and friends who loved her dearly. Pine Knot Funeral home is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
