Shirley Jo (Goodwin) Stephens age 83 of Whitley City, Kentucky passed from this life on Friday, August 14, 2026.
She was born into this world on August 21, 1942 to the late Alonzo Goodwin and Carrie (Jones) Goodwin. In addition to her parents, Shirley is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Edgar Stephens; a son, Jeffrey Stephens; brothers, Glenn, Carl Dean, Leslie, Jap, Tom, and Donnie Wayne; a half-sister, Georgie; and a half-brother, Estel, better known as Ducky.
Surviving family include her son, Michael Stephens of Lexington, Kentucky; her daughter, Linda Stephens Spradlin and son-in-law, David, of Chatsworth, Georgia who loved her very much; sisters, Joyce, Bonnie Faye (and Herman), Annie (and Carl), Pauline (and Harley), and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Also surviving are the best neighbors that she considered family, Carl & Sharon Blevins, Bill & Kathy Taylor, and Bill & Leslie Terry.
Miss Shirley worked for many years and retired several times. In her retirement years, she loved gardening and caring for her beautiful flowers. She loved walking and leading the YOGA girls at the senior citizens center. She was very active in her church, Revelo Church of God, and loved her church family. When able, she also loved to travel to Lexington to visit her son and her sister, Bonnie Faye, as well as traveling to Georgia to visit her daughter, son-in-law, and many neighbors there. Miss Shirley was loved everywhere she went.
She will be missed by many.
Miss Shirley passed peacefully with her son and daughter by her side at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Unit. The family is very grateful for the excellent care that she was provided.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Pine Knot Funeral Home with Pastor Les Gilreath officiating. Burial to follow in the Hayes Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday after 1:00 pm until service time.
