WOODROW COFFEY

November 8, 1924 — August 31, 2017

Woodrow Coffey, age 92 years, 9 months, and 23 days, of Stearns, Kentucky passed from this life on August 31, 2017 in Corbin, Kentucky at the Baptist Health of Corbin Hospital.

He was born in Wolf Creek, Kentucky on November 8, 1924 the son of James Perk Coffey and Clara (Correll) Coffey Phillips. In July of 1944, Woodrow joined the Lower Wolf Creek United Baptist Church and served as clerk and a deacon for over 70 years. After 23 years and 3 months, he retired from the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company where he had worked in the lumber yard, coal tipple, and the coal mines. Woodrow loved gardening, animals, singing with his wife Zelma, and playing his banjo and guitar. He was also an avid beekeeper and assisted several other keepers of the community to preserve and care for bees. Woodrow was well known for his kind and loving heart. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, telling stories of his life, spreading God’s word and coveting prayer from everyone.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Zelma (Jones) Coffey of 59 years; a grandson, Anthony "Bubba" Steward; brother, Theodore Coffey; and sisters, Jim Gilreath and Gertie Gilreath.

Survivors include his son, Bradley Coffey and wife, Joyce; daughters, Vicky Coffey, Tricia Steward, Gail Timperio and husband, Mike, and Amelia King and husband Joey; brothers, Forest Phillips and Gilson Phillips; and a sister, Gloria Jones. Woodrow is also survived by his grandchildren that he called his “shugs”, Bradley Coffey, Jr., Jennifer Martin, Ann Richmond, Christopher Troxell, Tia Steward, Vincent Timperio, Dominic Timperio, James "Bo" King, Stephanie Davis, and Jeremy King; 18 great-grandchildren; and several other children who called him papaw.

The family would like to give special thanks to Pat Coffey, brother-in-law, Lonnie Jones, Tasha Simpson, Baptist Health of Corbin, and Intrepid Home Health for the loving care that was given to Woodrow during his final years. 

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 3, 2017 at 10am in the Pine Knot Funeral Home with Bro. Carl “Cubby” Clark and Bro. Israel Clark officiating. Burial to follow in the Corder Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 6pm Saturday, September 2, 2017 at the funeral home.
